RD’s pantry staple list includes pasta
In a recent article for the Tampa Tribune entitled “Get by with a little help from healthy staples,” registered dietitian and cookbook author, Tina Ruggiero discusses important foods to keep in your pantry to ensure that you eat a healthy diet. Even if your cupboards look bare, as long as you have a few key ingredients hanging around you can still create a delicious and satisfying meal.
The short list includes pasta and rice, olive oil, tuna fish, and beans and legumes. Tina notes:
“Pasta is a blank canvas with which you can create an economical, healthy meal. Whether whole grain or conventional, pasta tossed with fresh sauces or vegetables can pack a significant amount of vitamins, minerals and fiber into a small serving. It’s all about the preparation. I mix fettuccini with a simple kale and pumpkin seed pesto for a vitamin A- and E-rich meal. I make farfalle with beets and roasted Brussels sprouts for a dish rich in fiber, vitamin C and iron.”
The article reminds us that by keeping just a few staples in the house or apartment, you can make a healthy meal the whole family will love! You can view the full article here.
