Monterey County Herald Nutritionist discusses “Grain Brain”
When prompted by a reader to give her opinion about Dr. Perlmutter’s recent book Grain Brain, Nutritionist Barbara Quinn gives her professional opinion in her latest column entitled “Pay no mind to ‘Grain Brain‘”.
The nutritionist goes on to discuss why the claims made by Dr. Perlmutter in his book that wheat, gluten, carbs and sugar are the cause of dementia are not backed in science noting that well studied diets like the Mediterranean Diet or the DASH Diet (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension Diet) are rich in fruits and vegetables, whole grains, nuts and legumes and are back by research.
Additional resources which Quinn thinks one should consider are suggestions from Consumer Reports noting a diet with a variety of whole grains, fruits and vegetables is the ideal diet and by the World Health Organization that a higher intake of whole grains could help alleviate worldwide death and disability.
