New Study Finds Any Diet Can Be Effective for Weight Loss
Trying different diets and not seeing any results can be extremely frustrating. But, a new study published this week in the Journal of American Medical Association states any low-carbohydrate or low-fat diet can produce significant weight loss results, as long as the dieter sticks to it.
Researchers looked at nearly 50 trials that tested 11 popular, branded diets for at least three months. All the participants were overweight and the diets included low-fat, low-carb, and other popular plans like Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig. Compared to no diet at all, each of the diets was successful and dieters lost at least 12 pounds. Madelyn Fernstrom, TODAY diet and nutrition editor stated the new findings underscore what health experts have always recommended: “It’s the calories in and calories out that matters.”
Fernstrom also stated, “The good news is that whatever plan ‘speaks’ to you is one that will work for the long haul.” TODAY nutritionist Joy Bauer also offered her tips that will make any diet successful:
- Have a positive attitude
- Track your progress
- Pick a plan that fits your lifestyle
- Forgive your slip-ups
